Monticello was a plantation owned by Thomas Jefferson United States 3rd president. It was an agricultural farm where wheat, tobacco and other crops was grown and a site for the cottage industry. Records have it that Monticello was a 5000 acre plantation where over 400 slaves lived and worked during Jefferson's lifetime. Learning about this place brings the question how the man who wrote "all men are created equal" could own a plantation full of his very own slaves.
